Retrospect Clients for Windows and Macintosh

Retrospect Clients let you back up Windows and Macintosh client
computers from Retrospect on a Windows or Macintosh computer.
Retrospect Clients require a copy of the Retrospect application.

This note contains important information about Retrospect client
software version 4.2 for Mac and 5.1 for Windows. Please read it
carefully. You may print this document.

Refer to the Retrospect Clients Installation Notes and Retrospect
User's Guide for more information on using Retrospect Clients. These
files require you have Acrobat Reader from Adobe Systems, it is a
free download available at www.adobe.com.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Requirements

Retrospect Clients require Retrospect 4.2 or later. If you are using
Retrospect 4.1 for Macintosh, a free updater is available on the
Dantz web site at www.dantz.com. If you have an older version,
contact Dantz customer service or visit the Dantz web site for
upgrade information.

Windows 95 clients require Winsock 2.0, available at no charge from
Microsoft. See the Retrospect Clients Installation Notes document
for details.

Macintosh TCP/IP clients require System 7.1 or later and Open
Transport 1.1 or later. Macintosh AppleTalk clients can only be
backed up by Retrospect running on a Macintosh. The currently
shipping Macintosh client installer requires System 7.0 or later.

License Codes

Retrospect requires a license code to use Retrospect Clients. Write
down or print out your license codes for future reference and keep
the codes in a safe place with your Retrospect registration number
or license code.

If you purchased your Retrospect Clients via download, your license
code should be e-mailed to you by your vendor; if you did not
receive it, contact your vendor. (NOTE: Upgrades do not include
license codes.) To use a license code, enter it in the License
Manager (under the Window menu in the Retrospect application).

Installation Tips

Network administrators may create a convenient network installation
folder by copying the Retrospect Client folder to a file server.
This is also useful for installing on computers without floppy or
CD-ROM drives.

The Retrospect and Retrospect Clients CDs have partitions for both
Windows and the Macintosh. To install the Retrospect Client for
Macintosh, insert the CD into a Macintosh and launch the installer
from the Macintosh volume, or copy the contents to a Macintosh
accessible server for easier installation.

If you downloaded the Retrospect Clients from a PC and you want to
use Retrospect Clients for Macintosh, you will need to decode the
Retrospect Clients for Macintosh installer. Copy the Retrospect Mac
Clients encoded file to a Macintosh and use Stuffit Expander to
decode the file. Stuffit Expander is available for free from Aladdin
Systems at www.aladdinsys.com.

If you downloaded the Retrospect Clients from a Macintosh and you
want to use Retrospect Clients for Windows, you will need to copy
the Windows installer (Client Setup.exe) file to a Windows
accessible server and run the installer from that server.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Upgrading Windows clients to Windows 2000

Retrospect Client 5.1 fully supports upgrading from earlier versions
of Windows to Windows 2000. After upgrading to Windows 2000, the
Retrospect Client software will automatically start up and work as
it did under the previous version of Windows.

If you are using Retrospect Client 5.0, you need to update the
clients to Retrospect Client 5.1 before upgrading to Windows 2000.
Update the clients in question over the network or run the
Retrospect Client 5.1 setup utility on each client you plan on
upgrading to Windows 2000.

See the Client Installation Notes for instructions on using the
Retrospect Client for Windows updater with Retrospect.

Updating Clients

Updating Windows Clients

Using Retrospect with the Retrospect Client for Windows updater (Win
Client Update 5_1.rcu) updates previous Retrospect Windows clients
to Retrospect Client 5.1 for Windows.

When updating Windows clients to the latest version, the client
computer must be restarted for the update to take effect. The
restart is required for the updated client to be accessible by
Retrospect. For your convenience, we have provided two versions of
the Windows client updater. One automatically restarts the client
computers immediately following the update, the other requires a
manual restart.

To automatically reboot the clients after being updated, select the
client updater in the "Windows - Automatic Reboot" folder.

If you prefer to manually reboot each client after being updated,
select the client updater in the "Windows - Manual Reboot" folder.

See the Client Installation Notes for instructions on using the
Retrospect Client for Windows updater with Retrospect.

If you don't wish to update clients over the network, you may update
them by running the client installer on individual computers.

Updating Macintosh Clients

Using Retrospect with the Retrospect Client for Macintosh updater
(Mac Client Update 4_2.rcu) updates Retrospect 4.0 and 4.1 clients
to Retrospect Client 4.2 for Macintosh. See the Client Installation
Notes for instructions.

If you have pre-4.0 Retrospect client software (also known as
Retrospect Remote), run the Retrospect Clients Installer on the
older client to update it to Retrospect Client 4.2 for Macintosh.

NT Registry Backup

Retrospect for Windows directly supports registry backup for all
Windows operating systems. If you previously used Retrospect clients
for Windows version 1.1 with Retrospect on a Macintosh, you may have
Dantz's Registry Backup Manager software installed on your NT
clients. This software is no longer necessary. To remove the
Registry Backup Manager utility, perform the following. Log in to
Windows NT with Administrator permissions. At the DOS command
prompt, change to the client directory (C:\Dantz\Remote\ by
default), enter "Regcopy /RemoveService", then delete the file
Regcopy.Exe.

Using Retrospect Clients with Retrospect for Macintosh

NT Registry Backup

The Registry Backup Manager automates and simplifies Windows NT
registry backup and it required for backing up Windows NT clients
with Retrospect for Macintosh.

The Registry Backup Manager is installed by the client software's
Setup program. To activate the registry backup manager, log in with
Administrator permissions, go to the C:\Program Files\Dantz\Client
folder. Double click on Regcopy.exe. Set the time and click On. This
will activate it. The program's help has detailed instructions on
its use.

To uninstall it, log in with Administrator permissions. At the DOS
command prompt, change to the client directory, enter "Regcopy
/RemoveService", then delete the file Regcopy.Exe.

Memory Use

If you have more than 100 clients logged in to Retrospect, we
recommend increasing the Retrospect application's default memory
allocation by 2K bytes for each client. For example, with 150
clients you would increase the default memory size by 300K.

Always Load Open Transport TCP/IP

To ensure the backup Macintosh is always ready to respond with
TCP/IP, you must change a setting in the TCP/IP control panel.

Open the TCP/IP control panel and choose User Mode from the Edit
menu. Select Advanced mode and click OK. Click the Options button,
uncheck the "Load only when needed" checkbox, and click OK. Close
the TCP/IP control panel, save changes, then restart.

Issues with Retrospect Clients for Windows

Microsoft Windows 95 TCP/IP Fix

A bug in Windows 95 networking software can cause Retrospect to
report a networking error. Microsoft has resolved this problem and a
free fix is available from Microsoft.

Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 do not require an
update.

We strongly urge you to update your Windows 95 systems.

The hot fix for Windows 95 is installed by the client software Setup
program. After installation, choose Run from the Start menu, then
type "C:\Program Files\Dantz\Client\VTCPUPD" (or your different
installation path) and click OK. Follow the instructions in
Microsoft's installer, then restart to complete the fix. Repeat for
each Windows 95 computer to be used with Retrospect.

Technical Details: The problem can occur when Retrospect pauses then
later resumes a TCP/IP network transfer. For example, it can happen
when Retrospect requests media during the nightly backup and you
insert a new tape the next morning. The bug can cause Retrospect to
report error -519 (network communication failed) when it resumes a
paused transfer.

Suspend

If you or a client user uses the "Suspend" function of Windows 95,
which powers off a mobile computer without shutting it down, you
must restart the client computer before Retrospect can access it.

Microsoft has an update to address this problem, but Microsoft does
not recommend updating unless you are severely impacted by this
specific problem. For more information about this problem and the
update, visit Microsoft's web page at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q181/7/77.asp.

This problem is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.

Issues with Retrospect Clients for Macintosh

TCP/IP Dial-up Configuration

A Macintosh configured with a TCP/IP dial-up connection (such as to
an Internet provider or online service) presents problems when used
as a TCP/IP client of Retrospect. Because Open Transport TCP/IP is
not multi-homing (that is, it cannot have dial-up Internet access
and local Ethernet TCP/IP working at the same time), Retrospect will
not be able to communicate with the networked client. You can
maintain multiple TCP/IP configurations, manually switching from
dial-up for Internet work to local network for Retrospect work. If
you forget to switch from the dial-up configuration to the local
network, Retrospect will fail to work with TCP/IP. If you are using
Retrospect for Macintosh, consider using AppleTalk for best
reliability on a Mac client with TCP/IP dial-up.
